How sound design shapes the viewer experience in film

Sound design is one of the least visible crafts in filmmaking, yet it controls more of the audience's emotional response than most people realise. Here's how it actually works.

Sound design in film is responsible for much of what audiences call "atmosphere." A scene's tension, warmth, or dread rarely comes from the image alone. The low-frequency rumble under a thriller, the brittle silence before a confrontation, the exact pitch of a door closing in an empty house: these choices are deliberate, engineered frame by frame by a sound designer who understands exactly what the human nervous system does with audio information.

It's one of cinema's oldest crafts, and one of its most underestimated. Most viewers attribute a powerful scene entirely to performance or cinematography. They're wrong, or at least only partly right.

What a sound designer actually does

A sound designer's job begins long before post-production. On serious film productions, the sound team is consulted during pre-production to identify which sounds will need to be built from scratch, which will be captured on location, and which require what's called Foley: the art of recording everyday sounds in a studio, performed in sync with the picture.

Foley artists recreate footsteps, clothing movement, the clink of cutlery, the squeak of a leather jacket. These sounds are rarely usable as recorded on set. Microphones positioned to capture dialogue pick up too much room noise. The result is a track that's too muddy to carry emotional clarity. So the sound team rebuilds the sonic world of the film in controlled conditions, layering in each element separately so every frequency can be tuned.

That process of layering is where design decisions get made. A footstep isn't just a footstep: it's a choice about character. Heavy, deliberate heel strikes communicate authority. Fast, light steps communicate anxiety. The same actor walking through the same corridor sounds completely different depending on which Foley choices the designer makes.

The relationship between sound and emotion

Human hearing is faster than human vision at triggering a stress response. The auditory cortex processes threat signals, specifically low-frequency irregular sound, before the visual cortex has fully processed what it's seeing. Film sound designers exploit this directly. The technique is well-established: filmmakers like Walter Murch (who designed sound for Apocalypse Now and The Godfather) wrote extensively on how sound placement controls audience psychology at a near-physiological level.

This is distinct from the role of a film score. Where music operates emotionally through melody and harmony, sound design works through texture, frequency, and space. The two interact, but they do very different jobs. How film scores shape the way audiences feel is its own discipline, and the best productions treat score and sound design as separate conversations that need to be reconciled in the final mix.

Silence is also a tool. A sudden drop to near-silence after sustained ambient noise can be more alarming than any jump scare. The brain interprets it as abnormal. Something has been removed from the environment. That's a danger signal, and the body responds accordingly.

Diegetic vs non-diegetic sound

Film sound falls into two categories, and knowing the difference matters for understanding what designers are doing. Diegetic sound exists within the world of the story: dialogue, a car engine, rain on a window. The characters could theoretically hear it. Non-diegetic sound comes from outside the story world: a film score, a voiceover narration.

The interesting territory is the blurry line between them. A sound designer can take a diegetic sound, say the ticking of a clock, and stretch it, pitch-shift it, and layer it under a dramatic scene until it becomes something closer to a musical element. The clock is still technically in the room. But it's doing non-diegetic emotional work. This kind of manipulation sits at the heart of what separates a sound designer from a sound recordist.

Productions that blur this line well create a feeling in the audience that's hard to articulate. Viewers sense something is wrong, or building, or being resolved. They don't know why. The sound designer knows exactly why.

Why production budgets shortchange sound

Sound design is where film budgets are cut first. The reasoning is visible: producers can see a set, a costume, a location. They can't see a sound. The argument for spending on a sound designer is harder to make in a budget meeting, even though the audience experiences sound continuously for the entire duration of the film.

The consequences show up clearly in the final product. Low-budget productions often have flat, dead soundscapes where nothing feels real. Dialogue sounds like it was recorded in a box. Ambient environments feel generic. The scene might be well-lit and well-acted, but it doesn't land emotionally because there's no texture beneath it.

A beautifully shot video with a flat, poorly constructed audio track reads as low quality to any audience that's been conditioned, consciously or not, by decades of well-designed cinema. Streaming platforms have done something interesting to sound design. On one hand, they've increased the volume of content produced globally, which means more demand for sound designers. On the other, they've changed the conditions under which audiences consume audio. Most viewers watch on laptops, tablets, or televisions without decent speakers. Earbuds dominate.

This has pushed sound designers to think about frequency ranges that survive compression and consumer-grade playback. The techniques that made Apocalypse Now terrifying in a cinema don't translate identically to a MacBook speaker. Designers working in the streaming era need to build tracks that carry emotional weight at lower volume, on smaller drivers, often in noisy domestic environments.

The pressure from streaming has also accelerated interest in immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos, which is now supported by Apple TV+, Netflix, and Disney+. Atmos allows sound designers to place individual audio elements in three-dimensional space around the listener. It's genuinely transformative for certain genres, particularly action and horror. The format also creates new problems: a mix designed for Atmos has to be checked in stereo downmix, where it often sounds quite different.

Understanding how content reaches an audience is increasingly part of how it's made. That same logic applies to branded video and documentary work, not just narrative film. Indie film distribution now routes through the same streaming infrastructure, which means independent filmmakers face the same Atmos-versus-stereo decisions that used to belong to studio productions.

The tools sound designers use

The industry standard digital audio workstation for film sound is Pro Tools, developed by Avid. Most studio post-production pipelines are built around it. Sound designers also use specialised libraries: services like Soundminer index thousands of recorded sounds for searching and retrieval, and studios like Universal Production Music and Warner Chappell license pre-recorded audio elements for use in production.

Beyond libraries, many of the most distinctive sounds in cinema history were built from scratch. The lightsaber sound in Star Wars (designed by Ben Burtt) was a combination of a 35mm projector motor hum and interference on a television set recorded with a microphone. The point isn't the specific technique. The point is that distinctive sound requires invention, not just selection.

Digital tools have lowered the barrier. Software synthesisers, granular processors, and convolution reverbs give a single sound designer capabilities that once required a large studio team. The craft hasn't been automated out of existence by any of these tools. The decisions about what a sound should do and how it should feel still require human creative judgement.

What this means for non-fiction and branded video

The principles of sound design don't belong exclusively to narrative cinema. Documentary filmmakers use ambient sound construction to place viewers in a location. Corporate video productions use carefully chosen audio texture to signal brand values without a single word of dialogue. A technology company's product video might use clean, precise, high-frequency sounds to signal precision. A non-profit's fundraising film might use soft, human-scale ambient sound to signal warmth and proximity.

These aren't accidental choices in well-produced work. They're sound design decisions, even when the budget didn't include a dedicated sound designer. Someone made them. And if nobody made them deliberately, the audience still experiences the result.

Sound is never neutral. It's either working for the story or against it.
