Autoplay video has become one of the most quietly contentious design decisions on the modern web. Platforms and brands adopted it because the numbers looked good: time on page went up, video completion rates rose, and engagement metrics improved. What those numbers didn't capture was the friction building underneath. Users started muting tabs by reflex. Browser makers started enforcing restrictions.
